To those who have come from afar and near to this blessed place of Greccio, in order to celebrate this day of gladness and exultation of the birth of our Savior: May the child of Bethlehem, born of the Virgin Mary, make you overflow with joy and experience that singular consolation which St. Francis experienced at the foot of the manger (cf. 1Cel 85). Greccio was the chosen place by Divine Providence, where the Seraphic Father Saint Francis relived the memory of the Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem (cf. 1Cel 84); it was so unusual for the times that, in order “that this would not be considered a type of novelty, he petitioned for and obtained permission from the Supreme Pontiff” (LM 10, 7). Once again we are back with you. The Minister General and the Definitory wish to continue communicating with you by means of a bulletin issued from time to time after each Tempo Forte. If it has not happened till now it has been for want of time. We apologise to those who had hoped to see such a communication after the meetings already held. The evening is entitled, “Saint Francis, the Little Friar” and will be televised via Raiuno, who will tell the extraordinary experience of both life and faith realized in Saint Francis of Assisi and handed down by him to his Friars Minor. The Executive Committee for Formation and Studies will reconvene at the General Curia in Rome from January 25-27, 2010, in order to prepare the International Council for Formation and Studies and to reflect on drawing up a program for both the Continental and International Congresses SPFS in 2013. We have been blessed with a gift, an excellent gift that pours forth from the love of the Father for humanity, namely, “His blessed and glorious Son who is born to us” (IILF 11). St. Francis considered the visitation of the Friars one of his main obligations. When he could no longer visit them because of the “sickness and weakness” of his body (2LtF 3), he opted to write letters and send “messengers” to continue serving them and offering them “fragrant words” of his Lord (2LtF 2-3)… doc
